Athens is a city in Limestone County, Alabama, and is included in the Huntsville-Decatur Metro Area. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 18,967. According to the 2005 U.S. Census estimates, the city had a population of 20,972. [1] The city is the county seat of Limestone County, and is included in the Huntsville-Decatur Combined Statistical Area.

The racial makeup of the city was 77.72% White, 18.26% Black or African American, 0.40% Native American, 0.71% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.92% from other races, and 0.97% from two or more races. 4.86% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
